Robyn
Dance pop is not even close to a genre that I really care for, but I understand it's place in the music world. Certain people can only dance to really "easy" sounding rhythms with friendly repetitive lyrics- I get it... One thing I never understood the last couple years was the runaway success of Lady Gaga. I think it's relatively poorly made music even for the standards of the genre it's from, and she has absolutely nothing to say that's even remotely deep. I honestly think it was mostly her outlandish videos that jettisoned her to the status she got to so quickly... Anyways, i'm noticing the emerging popularity of Robyn and it's very refreshing to me. Most of the songs i've heard by her have some kinda depth to them, and are by no means progressive, but have a little something extra compared to most other dance pop.. I also like the fact that she's not a "classically attractive" person, but they are still pushing her images and not trying to hide her looks. Anyways, I feel like she's quickly taking up a lot of Lady Gaga's fanbase, to the point where Lady Gaga's new album that's about to drop (supposedly) is going to have a tough time duplicating the success of her first 2 releases.. This is good news to me because I feel it's a win for more artistically minded artists within the mainstream corporate world.. Much like how I only think Kanye West's music is OK at best, but I love the fact that he got popular when he did because it changed what was cool and acceptable within the mainstream corporate world of rap and brought the focus away from the fake gangsta mentality that so many mainstream rappers had, and also made sample based production "cool" again the mainstream. All of this stuff affects which independent artists are the next to get their shine, and I like it when certain people emerge in music that make others a little less lazy and comfortable than they might have been. Not only that, but it also affects pop music as a whole, because people always copy what's successful, and if what's successful isn't total bullshit (like it usually is) that makes everyone else either step their game up, or change their style for the better.
