Best Of 2010 Part 2

Continuing on......

Rakaa - "Crown Of Thorns"
I had no expectations for this at all. He clearly either stepped his game up this year with his rhymes, or has been saving all his best verses for this solo album, because he rarely comes as nice as he does throughout this album on Dilated Peoples' stuff.
Themselves - "CrownsDown & Company"
The remix album for 2009's CrownsDown. I actually like this better than the real album, which was only OK to me. Most of these remixes are good and quite far from the original versions and more of a display of the remixer's style, except for a couple missteps like the Buck 65 one.
Splatinum - 'Der Schplatzl 2010"
I know absolutely nothing about this act, but damn this album is tight. Super upbeat electronic stuff. A couple of the songs are remixes of other people's songs like Mochipet, who I also like a lot. Super bass bumpin.
Necro - "DIE!"
More or less the ultimate Necro album. All raw, no guests, all killer, no filler.
Brotha Lynch Hung - "Dinner & A Movie"
This is the best thing he's done since 1997's Loaded. Strange Music is a good fit for him.
School Of Seven Bells - "Disconnect From Desire"
They build on the sound they created on the first album, and do the opposite of the sophmore jinx with their 2nd album and released something super dope. Their voices are angelic.
Eels - "End Times"
This was the 2nd out of the 3 releases he's put out within the last 2 years which are supposed to be considered as a trilogy. This is my favorite of the 3, and strangely, the most acoustic sounding. Not characteristic for me.
Eskmo - "Eskmo"
I had never heard of this dude before, but Ninja Tune put this out, and that's all I needed to know. I'm sure i'll be listening to this a lot in 2011 considering I just recently bought it. Very impressive for a debut.
Evelyn Evelyn - "Evelyn Evelyn"
I think if I had to crown one single album the best of 2010, this would be it. Jason Webley & Amanda Palmer created one of the most unique side projects ever conceived- performing in costume and character as a conjoined twin. Seeing them do this live was a sight to see for sure, a once in a lifetime experience. But what is amazing about this album is how GREAT the actual songs are. Just instant timeless classics with their fake life story told extremely theatrically with great production as segways in between the songs. Most of the lyrics are extremely tongue in cheek (they do a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"). This album has held up extremely well with many repeat listens.
Of Montreal - "False Priest"
Not nearly as good as the previous album Skeletal Lamping, which I consider to be far and away their best, this is still a great album in it's own right. When I first heard this band a few years back, I never thought I would end up liking them this much, but they keep it interesting.
Philip Selway - "Familial"
Debut solo album from the drummer of Radiohead. Had no expectations, but this is a real nice soft rock album. His voice is good and his songs are also. Nothing mind blowing, but it makes me wonder how much input he has in Radiohead's matierial, becuase he self-produced this album quite well.
Declaime - "Fonk"
Him and his girlfriend Georgia Anne Muldrow have put out so many releases in the past 2 years, it's hard to keep up, and the crazy thing is that she makes almost every single beat, which she does to great effect here. Obviously he uses the Declaime moniker for more rap related matierial and Dudley Perkins more for his fake singing stuff. I feel like this is a very progressive rap album, while still maintaining a very traditional edge. The title doesn't lie, nice and funky.
