I was initially skepitcal of this album when it was first released. My mind was put at ease upon listening. Yeah, this isn't Donuts 2, but so what? The song that features his younger brother, Illa J, and sounds like something that would fit right in on the full length they made together, has Illa J bragging about how the beat is 12 years old and still bangin, which leads me to think- how much unreleased matierial from J Dilla is sitting out there? Can they keep releasing albums from him like they did to 2Pac? This album was mixed and put together by Pete Rock, who is obviously a worthy person for the task. One thing I find interesting about the majority of the instrumental tracks on this album, is how much it sounds like the stuff coming out of the L.A. beat scene recently. Clearly his influence runs wide. For the most part this album runs like a more electronic sounding Donuts, with a few rap songs here and there. The last track sounds like it could be on "The Shining" too. It pretty much sounds like all his albums in a blender. Definitely a fun listen, with lots of different sounds, but still all J Dilla.
