May 2012 Hotlist Week 3

Blockhead - "Interludes After Midnight" 2012
Blockhead is a funny artist to me. He stays good by staying the same as he always was, which is usually a quality I don't like in artists. He's barely changed his production style up at all since his first solo release, and i'm content with that. I can always count on him to come through with some good instrumental music to chill out to.

The MC Type - "Amateur Hour" 2008
I really think Type is a talented rapper that just needs to find the right balance between comedy and seriousness. This album falls in the comedy category, and anyone who knows me and my sense of humor will probably think this is weird of me to say, but I almost think most of the songs are too crass to enjoy. Dude is insanely talented though, and I think he hasn't created his best material yet.

Killer Mike - "R.A.P. Music" 2012
I never really thought too much of Killer Mike from his Dungeon Family stuff and solo albums, but this album he hits it outta the park. All beats done by El-P, which seems like an odd combo on paper, but really works when you hear it in reality. They found the right balance between catchy down south stuff and El-P's abrasive, bangin production. I especially enjoy the song "Reagan".

John Robinson - "Brilliant Soundscapes Vol. 2" 2012
Little instrumental EP. Most of these beats are only OK to me, but a couple were pretty cool.

Jimmy Edgar - "XXX" 2010
I've been going through this dude's career, and it seems like he doesn't really progress at all in between albums. This seems like a weak version of his 2006 album. Disappointing.

Madlib - "Medicine Show #13: Black Tape" 2012
My theory is that he had 2 albums worth of remixes for Medicine Show #12 and just really wanted to put out another one. I think I actually like this one a little bit better than #12.

Rapewolf - "Rapewolf In Compton" 2011
This album is hard to explain. It's underground rap for people that have been into underground rap for so long, that the current scene is so passe to them that it's annoying and boring. It's nice to hear something that doesn't have some specific formula or agenda coming out of the hip hop scene at all.

The Alchemist - "Rapper's Best Friend" 2007
He just put out the part 2 to this, so I figured i'd go back and listen to this one again. It's a little better than I remember, but still pretty standard Alchemist stuff. I actually think he's been at the top of his game the last year or so with the Gangrene stuff he's been doing with Oh No.

Anders Osborne - "Black Eye Galaxy" 2012
I saw this guy open up for and also play in Karl Denson's band earlier this year. He displayed some pretty insane guitar skills in a live setting. It's a shame that aspect of him doesn't come through in this album a little bit more. For the most part I would recommend this album to people who like The Black Keys, but I think his singing voice needs a little work. He shows promise though.

SebastiAn - "The EP Collection" 2012
This is a compilation of all the singles that were released last year for his "Total" album. I had a lot of these songs already, but I still got 4-5 new remixes from this. I never thought I would hear Mayer Hawthorne's voice over a Rustie track.

Tyler The Creator - "Bastard" 2010
When people get really popular, and I just can't understand why, I find myself obligated to go back and listen again, to make sure i'm not crazy or something. I just can't get into Odd Future outside of 4 or 5 songs total from tons of releases. I wonder if I would enjoy them more if I was still young and on drugs and freestyle sounding rap wasn't played out as fuck to me yet.

DeVotchKa - "SuperMeloDrama" 2000
Going to see them live again in July, so i'm brushing up on the old stuff again. This definitely sounds like their first album compared to all the rest that came after it. Them just trying stuff out, seeing what works. Just a glimpse of the greatness that was to come, but still a good LP in it's own right.

Krizz Kaliko - "Kickin & Screamin" 2012
It's no secret how big of a fan of his I am to people who know me, so I was anticipating this one, big time. He delivers for the most part, I have a feeling this album will have certain songs that will grow on me even more with repeat listens. I kinda wish he didn't try to make a foray into a couple rock/rap songs on here, but whatever, there's plenty of other songs to bump on here, and i'm sure there's some really happy trailer park residents somewhere listening to those couple songs I don't care for. On the flipside- the best songs on here are some of the best of his career, and I feel like this is his most "sellable" album yet, in terms of what regular people might think about it.

WUF TIX - "Scumbag Delirium" 2011
This is The MC Type and at least one other dude, but i'm unsure of who the other people in the group are due to my lack of knowledge about the Seattle hip hop scene. An enjoyable listen for sure.

Jimmy Edgar - "Majenta" 2012
I like this one a lot better than his 2010 album, but it's still not stellar. There's some dope electro sounding stuff on here. The best songs on the album are a lot better than the rest of  the album, unfortunately.

Jimmy Edgar - "This One's For The Children" 2012
Single from the album, with an exclusive B-Side and the instrumental of the title track.

Quakers - "Quakers" 2012
I actually don't know a whole lot about who actually made the beats on here. I know Geoff Barrow from Portishead had something to do with this album, and it came out on Stones Throw. I like the A.D.D. nature of the tracklisting, with mostly short songs and a lot of quick interludes, so you don't get bored, and if you don't enjoy something, it will be over soon. It mostly sounds like a fake Madlib album, but i'll take that over most new hip hop. The guest list is varied from new underground cats who i've never heard of before, and some well-known vets.

The Cinematic Orchestra - "In Motion #1" 2012
This is just like any other great jazz or classical album, where if you're into the right mood for it, it is the most relaxing and exhilerating music, at the same time.

May 2012 Hotlist Week 2

Machinedrum - "Room(s) Extended" 2012
2011 album re-released with a full length bonus disc full of half new songs and half remixes from the album. This dude just won't quit.

Adept - "Pulsar" 2012
These four songs sound so good on headphones. Very spacey and dreamy with some good panning.

Joker - "Skitta" 2012
Pretty decent new song.

Mexicans With Guns - "Ceremony" 2011
I can't get enough of this album. I like that he doesn't just stick to one particular style.

Traxman - "Pacman Juke" 2011
I've been obsessed with Traxman and juke and footwork music for the last couple weeks.

Joker - "Remix EP" 2012
This was corny and unnecessary. Even the one by Rustie is just OK.

Mickey Avalon - "Loaded" 2012
This is one of the worst albums i've heard in a long time. I can see why it was delayed for so long- because he didn't really have shit worth putting out. So fucking corny and boring.

Norah Jones - "Little Broken Hearts" 2012
Upon first listen, I'll say that I think this is her best effort so far.

Squarepusher - "Estrobia" 2012
Little 3 song EP that appeared shortly after the new full length. These 3 songs are all completely different styles. Only the last song is all noisy and annoying and borderline unlistenable. The other 2 tracks are gold.

Lazer Sword - "Memory" 2012
I think they did something similar to what Common did with his career after the "Electric Circus" album was a commercial failure for him. He took lame and uncreative people's opinions to heart and based his next album on those criticisms and tried to come up with an album that he thought "regular people" would enjoy. The end result was an adequate album filled with OK to decent songs, but nothing nearing the classic album type status of some of his previous releases. I'm not saying I think Lazer Sword's first album was a classic, but it was highly enjoyable for me, partially due to the various styles they tried to accomplish. They must've read some of the reviews that talked shit about how they "didn't have an identity" and "couldn't decide what style they want to do" and took it to heart, because this album is WAY too even from song to song for my personal tastes. Instead of being something that perks up my ears this is just kinda background music. It's not bad at all, it's completely adequate, it's just not great.

Lazer Sword - "URB Presents: Lazer Sword" 2012
So when I saw them live, they were really sloppy, but they at least threw down the jams. This is like the opposite type of mix as that was. This is even and boring, but well mixed.

"Ghostly International Vol. 1: Idol Tryouts" 2003
A nice lil compilation I never heard when it was new.

Ministry - "Relapse" 2012
This album is straight up funny and a lot more entertaining to me than all his dead horse beating, Bush hating albums from the last 10 years. Some of the guitar solos and drum programming on this album is insane. It's funny that this is Al's first album as a sober man, and it's poking fun at the rehab culture a lot. Any of their old fans that stopped listening to them should give this a whirl.

Jimmy Edgar - "Color Strip" 2006
Yes, i've been sleepin on this guy. It's like an underground version of Chromeo that's more electronic and less pop oriented.

The Sight Below - "Murmur EP" 2009

A crazy bombardment of filtered and reverbed sound.

Feist & Mastodon - "Feistodon" 2012
I don't know how this collaboration came about, but the end results are surprisingly good. Just a 2 song split single released for record store day. The A Side is Feist with Mastodon as the backing band and the B Side is a new Mastodon song that is really solid.

Canblaster & DJ Slow - "Boiler Room #89" 2012
Very solid mix. I'd love to see Canblaster DJ live sometime.

Aaron Freeman - "Marvelous Clouds" 2012
All serious Ween fans need to hear this. I still don't really know what to make of it. It's not bad, by any means, but it's just weird to hear him make something so straightforward.

Travis Barker - "Give The Drummer Some" 2011
This album has potential, but is just too corny overall to be taken seriously. He definitely knew the right type of guest rappers to have though, you gotta give him that. I just feel like the beats he makes are mostly lackluster, and the choruses on most of these songs bring the songs way down as well. You can't just get a bunch of good rappers to make good verses and expect that to carry an LP.

Gangrene - "The Odditorium" 2012
I like the duo of Alchemist and Oh No a lot more than I thought I would. They are staying consistent with these releases, some of these beats are the best beats i've heard in hip hop in a while.

Best Of 2011 Part 12

Toro Y Moi - "Underneath The Pine"
I've heard a lot of people say that they like their first album from 2010 and not this one, and I guess I don't agree with that opinion. I think they took a little turn, similar to what MGMT did on their second album as well, that threw the audience they had built up for a loop, and some people don't enjoy being surprised (usually the same people who enjoy predictable, happy endings in movies). Some of the songs come off like a cheap Flaming Lips, while others are more dancy, but this is definitely more live-band oriented and less 80's nostalgic than the first album was. It's too bad they were really boring and borderline inadequate seeming in concert, but I still enjoy all their studio output a lot.

Reso - "Valken"
Reso has really honed in on a certain blend of hyperactive drum & bass and hard dubstep. "War Machine" is the standout A-Side track, but the other 3 songs hold up as well. I like this better than the stuff he's released since this.

Georgia Anne Muldrow - "Vweto"
This lady just will not stop hitting the world with a barrage of music. I'm not complaining. This might actually be my favorite album by her. All instrumental, I kinda feel like she was trying to dabble in making a "beat scene" album within her own style. I especially love the opening track "The No-No Chords".

Ryan Hemsworth - "A Way"
I know nothing about this dude. This was recommended to me by a friend as a free Soundcloud or Bandcamp download, and this might be the best find i've ever had on those sites. Very promising stuff here from various styles of electronic music, all executed well. I'm interested to see where he tries to fit in within the music world.
