2011's Disappointments part 3

Mochipet - "Hello My Name Is Mochipet"
Mochipet seems to be a diverse and ever-changing electronic artist, and this seems to be his stab at the whole "electronic producer" album that sounds like a pop compilation, much like Crookers or Chemical Brothers would do. Anyone that has heard any of Mochipet's other music will know how much of a letdown it is that he would even do an album of this style. I think he's just trying to show the world he can do more than people think he can, but i'd personally rather hear his crazy shit and not this bland drivel.

Vast Aire - "OX 2010: A Street Odyssey"
I think this is just the continuation of the downward spiral he's been in musically since the Cannibal Ox album. It must suck to put out such a great album so early on in your career, and then spend the rest of your career trying to regain that same glory. There's still some OK songs here, but I think each solo album of his gets progressively less interesting and more generic sounding, and now this is solo LP #3 and it's still happening. He likes recycling old lines from verses into new choruses a lot.

Josh Martinez - "P.O.W. (Pissed Off Wild)"
I don't know if he was listening to Street Sweep Social Club and wishing Tom Morello would do an album with him, so he hired some Stephan Spielbergo version of him to be in his band or something, but that's how this album comes off. I think Josh's style is well-suited for a rock/rap album, but I just don't really like the approach he chose to take, and I especially don't like this backing band.

Yelawolf - "Radioactive"
This should have been one of the most popular albums of the year, or at least one that everyone was talking about. Instead it's on some "what the fuck is this horrible garbage coming out my speakers!?!" type shit. I feel like Eminem signed him to Shady/Aftermath and convinced him that it would be better to try and sound like a new version of him instead of just doing what had gotten him signed to the label in the first place. This album ended up sounding like rap for 50 year old white women instead of some hard car stereo bangers.

Hudson Mohawke - "Satin Panthers"
This EP isn't terrible, but after 2009's "Butter" being one of the best albums of the last decade to me, I really wanted his new songs to be better than these are. He went for a minimalist club banger approach, but it seems too contemporary sounding for him. I'm sure he's got plenty of new material about to be released out the cannon, so we'll see what he tries to do next.

J.Rocc - "Some Cold Rock Stuf"
For how long this album was delayed, and how tight of a DJ he is, I was expecting a lot more. Most of these songs are really boring for the most part. I know there is a lot of subtle sample work going on, and I appreciate that, but if it ends up sounding uninteresting, I don't see what the point of all that work chopping was.

Everlast - "Songs Of The Ungrateful Living"
Dude, kill yourself.... or at least stop making music....... please?

LMFAO - "Sorry For Party Rocking"
I legitimately enjoyed the first album. "Shots" is a classic party song and there was at least 4-5 other catchy club tunes on there. This album is just trying to keep that energy going, but with a more light, David Guetta style, electro-pop sound. I'm sure this album sounds good to people who never listen to any electronic music that's not on the radio, but to someone that hears a lot of it, this album is far too simplistic, production-wise. It's like they sucked the fun out of their gimmick they had going as well.

2011's Disappointments part 2

Death Grips - "Exmilitary"
The idea and even the sound of Zach Hill making beats for a MC to rap on sounds good in theory. Too bad he recruited this homeless sounding dude who is so awful I can't even try to give this album a chance instead of a seasoned vet that would fit with this production style like Busdriver or Myka 9.

Electric Six - "Heartbeats & Brainwaves"
I was never a fan of this band, nor did I expect this to be good, but this is possibly the worst rock album i've ever heard.

Brian Wilson - "In The Key Of Disney"
WHY? Just gross...

The Cars - "Move Like This"
This was touted as their big comeback record, but Ric Ocasek should just stick to production nowadays.

Blink 182 - "Neighborhoods"
Was never a fan of this style of music, but this is lame sounding compared to a lot of the old stuff to me.

Shigeto - "New Light"
This isn't a completely weak EP, but when someone switches up their style like this, i'd expect it to be done a little better. I've always known Shigeto to do a varied form of beat scene electronic music, but this sounds like some jazz/electronic act that would be on Ninja Tune or something. I have no problem with the style change, but these songs are really simple and boring sounding. It's not jazzy or electronic enough, it's just some bland background music.

Doomtree - "No Kings"
I was wondering where they were going to try to go as a group, and the answer is apparently nowhere. Everything about this album sounds mediocre to me. The beats, the lyrics, the choruses. Throw the song-ruining force that is Dessa in the mix, and you've got one stinker of an album.

Mac Lethal - "North Korean BBQ"
I've always been a huge Mac Lethal fan and this is the first thing he's released that didn't really grab me. A lot of these choruses get repeated way too many times for how average they are, and these just generally sound like the throwaway songs from his new album "Irish Goodbye" now that i've had a chance to peep that one out. This album isn't terrible, it's just really boring and makes me feel apathetic.

Prefuse 73 - "The Only She Chapters"
2011 was a year that a lot of electronic producers that were known for making high energy music tried their hand at making music that was a lot more laid back and ambient. I don't think this worked out particularily well for Prefuse. This is a cool album to put on when you're falling asleep, but that's about it.

Georgia Anne Muldrow - "Owed To Mama Rickie"
She puts out so much material that this is just a bump in the road. I don't know if she was trying her hand at making a more contemporary R&B album, or if Mama Rickie is someone in her life that these songs are for, but I miss the more jacked up sounding Georgia Anne who talks about real philosophy in her lyrics and not God and Jesus.

2011's Disappointments part 1

Blueprint - "Adventures In Counterculture"
This album is just plain awful. I was never the biggest Blueprint fan, especially after seeing a few sub-par live performances over the years, but I still enjoyed most of his studio output on some level. There is just nothing good I can say about this album. Every aspect of it is mediocre to pitiful.

Tech N9ne - "All 6's & 7's"
As you all probably know, i've been a pretty huge Tech N9ne fan for years, so I was excited for him to finally be getting the shine he deserved for so long. I was saddened by the fact that he made the mistake of giving us a watered down version of himself with this new found popularity. I was so disappointed in this album I never even checked out the Collabos album he also put out last year yet. Hopefully that has some good cuts on it.

Duran Duran - "All You Need Is Now"
I wasn't really expecting this to be good, but it's really really not good.

Daedelus - "Bespoke"

I'm a big Daedelus fan, but this newest LP didn't really do it for me. The songs either come off as uninspired or just weird for the sake of being weird without being interesting. He puts out so much material, i'm sure he'll have another release out before too long.

DJ Quik - "The Book Of David"

This album isn't weak at all, but I really expected more after all the press I read about this album before it came out, and how he was supposedly making some "big comeback". I get the feeling the people who wrote those articles had stopped listening to him albums ago and were just surprised his new output wasn't weak and didn't realize he's been one of the best producers in the game since his first album. There just wasn't as many straight up great songs on here as are on most of his other albums to me. Most of this one kinda seems like filler material, but Quik's filler is better than a lot of people's A-game.

Cerebral Ballzy - "Cerebral Ballzy"
The reason this is on here is because i'm disappointed that Adult Swim would affiliate themselves with such a shitty poser punk band. To top it all off, the video off this that got aired multiple times on Adult Swim is a huge Black Moth Super Rainbow bite. Get your own damn ideas for videos, posers!

Apparat - "The Devil's Walk"
After the previous stuff I had heard by him, I was expecting some epic LP that would change my life. This is not that album, nor is it even close. There's some cool stuff on here don't get me wrong, but every time I put this on I want there to be more to it than there is.

Kool Keith - "The Doctor Is In"
This is probably the most crackhead sounding musical garbage his name has ever been stamped on. A bold statement, any longtime Kool Keith fan can attest.

The Black Keys - "El Camino"
After how good of an album "Brothers" was, I was eager to hear this when I heard about it. What a stale sound they got going for this one. I can't believe Danger Mouse produced this, it doesn't have his sound at all, to me. The female backup singers do not sound good to me,and just gives the album a general corny feel. At least they succeeded in giving every new album it's own unique sound within their style, I just didn't enjoy it this time around.

Neon Indian - "Era Extrana"
After how much I enjoyed their debut album, this album is pretty sophomore slumpy. It's just too "normal" sounding after how unique the first one was. At least they were still good in concert touring for this.

Year in review

2011 was a weird, transitional year for me. It is the first year since I was 10 years old that rap wasn't my most listened to genre. I can come up with a lot of reasons for why that is, but the main reason is that most people that produce rap music are putting out stale music nowadays. Everything that I used to love about the genre is almost completely gone. No spontaneity. No progressiveness. No individualism. This is just a generalization, there's still tons of great MC's out there, but I feel like most of them don't know what kind of beats are even bumpin anymore. Sole summed it up best in one of his new songs when he said "most good new hip hop doesn't have any vocals, and every white kid with a laptop wants to be Flying Lotus". I think that's only true for cool people who know what's up, and I think he was actually complaining about that when he said that, but I am embracing this era of music with open arms, and I think that's an accurate portrait of the underground in america. I can't wait to see what happens in the next couple years, seeing what styles emerge. I think a lot of it has to do with a generation of kids who grew up with the internet finally becoming adults. Odd Future (Tyler The Creator etc.) made a lot of noise this year, and much like Kanye did for his brand of hip hop, I like the fact that they are opening doors for other people to release different sounding music within the mainstream, in their case, it's grimy cheap yet catchy sounding beats accompanying their absurdly juvenile rhymes, but I really think they are WAAY overhyped. If kids think that shit is super duper dope, they need to listen to some old Geto Boys and get some background education on hip hop in general. Lil B made a lot of noise this year. I don't mind what he does, it's kind of interesting that he's got such a big following doing these stream of consciousness type raps. I wish he would use his talent to actually try on an album, but until then he still makes me chuckle. Mac Miller also emerged as a new popular MC, but I don't really see what the hype is about. His voice and flow is kinda annoying to me. He's not straight up wack, but he's also not special at all.  We also saw the emergence of DJ Fresh as a superior bay area producer over the last few years. He's pretty much the king of that hyphy movement or what's left of it. Adele ruled the charts for the entire year. Something that I didn't think anybody could acheive anymore. My theory is that in the future there's going to be less superstars and more medium-popular artists, but her breakthrough sustainable success has proven that theory wrong thusfar, and also proves that a lot of people out there just want some new pop music that's somewhat REAL sounding. Foster The People came outta nowhere and scored a huge hit. I don't understand the draw of that song or group, but whatever, i'll just stick to my "weird shit". Bon Iver got WAY more popular. Another example of people just wanting some realness within pop music. Not really my cup of tea, but that album is a masterful production piece.  James Blake made, in my mind, an RJD2 type move by singing on his album when he doesn't do it very well, but his career really seemed to take off from that. I heard his live shows are really good though. I guess if I want to hear his instrumental stuff I can just hear the EP's and singles he puts out, which is plenty. Britney Spears had a semi-successful comeback at the beginning of the year, harnessing the production style of dubstep. Speaking of dubstep, I find it odd that it has officially become the sub-genre of choice within electronic music. I seriously didn't think it would be the style that would break a lot of the electronic haters out of their mold. This year Chris Brown probably should have withered away and disappeared into oblivion, but he enlisted Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne to be guests on "Look At Me Now" and made one of the biggest songs of the year by harnessing their energy. We saw ridiculous collaborations happen like Metallica & Lou Reed and Korn having their album produced by Skrillex. The Flaming Lips put out a bunch of bizarre projects, one involving a strobelite that comes with the album, and one involving a human skull with a usb cord hanging out of it and a hard drive in the brain with a 24 hour long song in it. I'm sure all their mega-wealthy fans are happy. M83's new one seems to be a breakhrough success. Seth MacFarlane put out the most unnecessary album of the year, singing old 40's and 50's style songs. I guess he just wanted the world to know that he could really sing, but nobody cares. The Beach Boys finally released "Smile" more than 40 years after it was recorded. The box set is pretty expansive and interesting. Stones Throw records had a bunch of their artists record concerts directly to vinyl and then sold them. They turned out really nice..... let's see that's all I can think of that won't be covered in my upcoming posts surveying last year...
