Tech N9ne - "E.B.A.H." 2012
Another EP from Tech, and this is like most of the others, where it's mostly filler tracks that didn't belong on the albums, but he's still a really tight rapper, so these EP's end up still being decent. The acronym title stands for Evil Brain Angel Heart. Also check out "Earregular" and "Don't Tweet This".
Tony Bones - "We Only Live Once" 2012
I really had no expectations for this album. The other album I heard by him was borderline comedy with how weak it was, but this one is actually listenable and even decent. He doesn't really follow the same blueprint a lot of other local rappers are following, but he does have this weird, original sounding yet unoriginal seeming kinda thing that works against him. Still, there's some good cuts to be heard, like "The Story Of Moral" featuring Slug and A.G. (yes, from D.I.T.C. fame). <I don't know why this track isn't up on youtube. Check the video for "Thrasher", a surprisingly tight, fast paced flow. Also "Live The Life" featuring Aquafresh. I'm eager to see if this is the best material he's got, or if this is a stepping stone transition into greener pastures and tighter albums. Time will tell.
AraabMuzik - "Electronic Dream 2" 2012
I would be content with him putting out one of these every year. I enjoy hearing him flip samples from mostly electronic stuff and put his own spin and programming on it. There's not really any duds on here. Check out "Outer Limits", "Feelin It", "Lalalala", and "Turn It Up". Just crazy good beats.
El-P - "R.A.P. Music Instrumentals" 2012
The instrumental version of this album is pretty good as a stand-alone album. Unlike El-P's own new album, "Cancer For Cure", I actually prefer the vocal version of this album, but this is still really great because El-P is still at the top of his game with these beats. Check out "Butane (Champion's Anthem)", "Don't Die" and "Southern Fried".
The Gaslamp Killer - "RA Podcast #329" 2012
Just an insanely good set. Just him doing what he does, which is be awesome. Check it out or subscribe to RA podcasts here.
Flying Lotus & Napalm Clique - "Flying Lotus & Napalm Clique" 2012
I don't know what this EP is all about. I found it by accident in my downloading travels. Just some simple sounding beats from Flying Lotus and these Napalm Clique dudes freestyling over them. Nothing special, but also nothing wack either. Check out "High" which is the only song I can find a link for.
The Gaslamp Killer - "Breakthrough" 2012
So here it is. The debut full length from The Gaslamp Killer. I definitely need to give this one time to soak in. I instantly like it a lot, but it's definitely not within the normal sound range of an electronic album, which is good, but I was maybe hoping for it to be a little more "bumpin" than it is. Who cares about that anyways? This album is the shit and it grows on me more with each listen. I like the collaborative nature of the album too. All types of people I listen to, all making music together. Check out "7 Years Of Bad Luck For Fun" featuring Dimlite, "Impulse" featuring Daedelus, "Flange Face" featuring Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and "Nissim" featuring Amir Yaghmai.
Groundislava - "Feel Me" 2012
Despite the ominous looking cover, this is some pretty light hearted music that i'm enjoying a lot. I like that this dude came out of the beat scene but definitely doesn't want to be confined to it, displaying all types of styles on here. Check out the awesome "Cool Party", also "After Hours" and "Living Under A Rock".
Anagraphs - "Something Out Of Nothing" 2012
New single/EP from Anagraphs. Nice hazy stuff to chill to. Get it for free here.
The Stepkids - "Sweet Salvation" 2012
New single/EP to tide people over for their 2nd full length LP due out early next year. These guys seem like they will be a group to watch for in years to come. They have a unique blend of funk and psyche rock. Check out the awesome video for the title track. Also check out "Bitter Bug" (not on youtube right now, a damn shame).
