Melvins - "1983" 2012
Newly recorded EP of songs by their original lineup. Not super great to me, but I also wasn't an old school fan of theirs. I didn't start listening to them until like 2008 or something. Check out "Psycho-Delic Haze" and "Stick Em Up Bitch".
The Blue Up? - "Spool Forka Dish" 1995
A friend of mine slipped me a burned copy of this, and it's definitely a hidden/forgotten gem from the 90's. I don't even remember seeing this in stores back in the day, and I definitely don't know any background on them, but this chick has a pretty sexy voice. I feel like Jennifer Charles from Lovage listens to this album or something. There's a slight Siouxsie influence present as well. I'd like to share more songs, but there's only this one video up on youtube right now, for the track "Exhibitionist". Seek this one out if you enjoy albums with good production and a strong female lead that doesn't sound corny. I also think it's funny that the "hidden" track on this album is the entire album played in reverse. Just strange, but kinda awesome.
Open Mike Eagle - "4NML HSPTL" 2012
I saw this guy open up for Busdriver a couple years ago and thought he was pretty cool. He came off seeming very down to earth, but still skilled. He even had a section of his set where he let anybody in the crowd that wanted to get up and freestyle or spit a verse come up and do that. That being said, based on that show and the few guest appearances i've heard him on in the last couple years, I really had no idea what to expect from an album from him. This came out on Fake Four Records and it fits right in with their current scheme of artists and styles. "Weird" hip hop that's not too weird to be accessible. Check out the video for "Your Back Pack Past" featuring Has-Lo. Also check out my favorite track from the album, "Universe Man" featuring Serengeti (who also has a good new LP and EP out). Also check "Cobra Commander" featuring Danny Brown, who seems to be on every new release lately.
Clark - "Iradelphic" 2012
I'm sure a lot of people will recognize a bunch of these songs from adult swim bumps, seeing as more than half of the tracks from this album have been used on there or episodes of Off The Air. One of those awesome, undefineable electronic albums that fits right at home being released on Warp Records. Check out "The Pining Pt. 2", "Secret" featuring Martina Topley-Bird, "Com Touch", and "Tooth Moves".
Cut Chemist - "Stones Throw Podcast #76: Cassette Culture" 2012
This mix is only for the adventurous and not the faint of heart. Very strange mix of stuff culled from cassette tapes. Get it here.
Bassnectar - "Bass Taster" 2011
A sampler of material ranging back to 2005. Some of these I already had, but most of this was new to me. Check out "Bass Head" and his remixes for Ellie Goulding's "Lights" and Gogol Bordello's "Immigraniada".
Humansuit - "Humansuit" 2012
Humansuit is the duo of Isaiah Toothtaker and Mestizo, 2 members of Tuscon's Machina Muerte crew. I've been liking pretty much everything that comes out of this camp, and this is no different. See for yourself here. A free Bandcamp download. Check the video for "I Gotcha" and "Lawnmower Man" featuring Gonjasufi and produced by Flying Lotus.
JJ DOOM - "Key To The Kuffs" 2012
JJ Doom is the combination of MF Doom and DJ/producer Dr. Who Dat. This is pretty ho-hum, as far as Doom albums go, but there's still some good songs to be heard, and it's definitely not a weak LP. He's just put out so many classics in the past, that it's almost unfair to even compare. Check out this bugged out video for "Guv'nor". Also check "GMO" featuring Beth Gibbons and the uncharacteristic sounding "Wash Your Hands".
Why? - "Sod In The Seed" 2012
Why? has 2 new releases out there, a full length LP, and an EP. This is the EP. Obviously, i'm a long time fan, and snatch all his new stuff up immediately. I'm not the hugest fan of the title track and lead single, but here is the video for it. Also check out "Twenty Seven", the very They Might Be Giants sounding "Probable Cause", and "The Plan".
Black Moth Super Rainbow - "Windshield Smasher" 2012
Lead single from the new album does not disappoint. Check the creepy video for the title track, directed by Tobacco himself. Also check out the only non-remix B-Side from this, "The Runner". Remixes by Odd Nosdam, Zackey Force Funk, Junk Culture, and Longmont Potion Castle as well as the instrumental version appear also.
Machinedrum - "Room(s) Extended" 2011-2012
Revisited this one due to the fact that I can't stop listening to him in general lately. The regular album came out last year and the bonus disc of remixes and extra songs was added as a re-release early this year. Really upbeat stuff that works equally well in clubs and headphones. Check out "Sacred Frequency", "Fantastix", and "Diepure".
Rustie - "Boiler Room x Colors DJ Set @ Appelsap Festival" 2012
I can't seem to find a good link to this anywhere, which is weird, but rest assured, this is a super dope set worth seeking out if you like him.
sloslylove - "Tendencies" 2012
First full-length release from this continually blossoming, yet still relatively unknown local artist. This is a notch above his previous EP's, and has me eagerly anticipating anything new he has to offer in the future. Check this out especially if you enjoy artists like Com Truise and Air, or if you just really miss the 80's. Get the free download here, or even order your own cassette copy. You really can't go wrong. Check out "Forever Love", "Gonna Make You Mine", "Lost In Motion" and "Juicy Flavors".
SupaSortaHuman x Shawn Kemp - "SupaSonic" 2012
Supa really came through with this one. Get it for free here. He sounds very comfortable over these super trapped up Shawn Kemp beats. A guest appearance from fellow internet legend Lil Ugly Mane doesn't hurt either. Also check out "Ridin Thru The Hood" featuring Dizzy D and "UFOin".
Machinedrum - "Sacred Frequency" 2011
EP from last year. I already mentioned the title track earlier in this post, but there's also some cool stuff on here like "Listen 2 Me" and "Flycatcha" featuring Body Language.
Dan Deacon - "America" 2012
Dan Deacon comes with another insane album that will take many more listens for it to really soak in with me. Check out the video for "True Thrush". Also check "Guilford Avenue Bridge" and the 4-part epic USA.
Matthewdavid - "Producers In 2012 Learn To Spread Love" 2012
Free download from Brainfeeder Records. This Mary Jane Girls cover is straight up insane. HIGHLY recommend grabbing this one. All 3 tracks are super tight and on some next level shit.
Machinedrum - "SXLND" 2012
Yet another new-ish single/EP from him. Check the title track. Also check "Van Vogue" and "No Respect".
Serengeti - C.A.R." 2012
A nice leftfield-ish hip hop release. Kinda reminds me of a futuristic version of some old Project Blowed type stuff. Check out the odd love song, "Go Dancing". Also check out "Amnesia" and "Peekaboo".
