Oh No - "Dr. No's Kali Tornadofunk" 2012
Another entry in the Dr. No series, which are his "Donuts" style albums of short beats, usually about a minute and a half long. Just enough for you to not get tired of them and probably want more. Good for short attention spans. Some of these seem to be the beats from his "Ohnomite" album from earlier this year, which is all samples from Dolemite stuff. This seems like the sister album to that album, seeing as how most of these songs are all from Dolemite related sources too. Check out "Stormy Nights", "Ohhhhh!", "Water Walking", "BMF", and "Bad Man".
Frank Ocean - "Channel Orange" 2012
This album, for the most part, lives up to it's hype. He is filling a void that people have for the type of quality R&B they miss from the 90's. I feel like right now within the pop audience, there's a lot of people who hate a lot of the new styles. Either the auto-tune route or the electro route, there's a certain amount of people that aren't having that at all, and artists like Frank Ocean are stepping up and providing the type of pop music that they miss hearing. I really appreciate the fact that this is an album you can bump all the way through. Most R&B singer albums have many fast forward worthy tracks. Check out "Sweet Life", "Pink Matter" featuring Andre 3000, and "Pilot Jones"
El-P - "Cancer For Cure Instrumentals" 2012
I prefer these instrumental versions of his newest album over the vocal versions. He can get too jibber jabbery at times, and also it's just better to bask in his production without any distractions. Check out "The Full Retard", "Works Every Time" and "The Jig Is Up".
Busdriver - "Arguments With Dreams" 2012
Nice little free download from Big Dada Records. More rappy sounding than his newest full length, where he seems to want to blossom into a full blown singer almost. This is a good collection of goofy songs full of his unique charm that people either love or hate. Check out "Everyday Oblivion", "The Serrated Blade Of A Smile", and this video for "Wernor Herzog" featuring Open Mike Eagle and Nocando.
Declaime - "Self Study" 2011
This one got lost in the shuffle with all the releases him and Georgia Anne Muldrow have been producing together over the last few years. Nothing new within their style here from previous releases, but that's not a bad thing. I personally enjoy these easy breezy sounding albums, where the vocalists are so adept at their craft, they can just ride over beats forever, constantly saying new things. Check out "Movin" featuring LMNO, "Lifestyles" featuring Shana Muldrow, and "Zoom" featuring M.E.D.
Mordwolf - "Demo 2012"
If you know me, you know I don't care too much for labeling metal sub-genres, so i'll just say that this shit goes really hard and I can't wait to hear more new music from these guys. I like it when I have no expectations for something and it just blows me away. Check it out here.
Down - "IV- Part I: The Purple EP" 2012
Apparently, they are releasing Part IV as a set of EP's, and this is the first one to hit the stores. All 6 of these tracks are pretty damn awesome. Reminds me of their first album, but maybe a little more sludgy. I can definitely see why the guys that were in Corrosion Of Conformity decided to work on Down full time for the time being, this material sounds great. Light years ahead of the travesty that was Part III. Check out "This Work Is Timeless", "Misfourtune Teller", and the video for "Witchtripper".
