Reading this description of this show beforehand, I was a little skeptical that they could pull it off well. I've seen Karl Denson perform with many different backing bands, as a matter of fact, I don't think i've ever seen him with the same band members for any 2 Tiny Universe shows. I think The Greyboy Allstars shows i've seen before had the same lineup as each other, but he really likes to shuffle the lineup around for the Tiny Universe tours. The last time I saw them, it was probably the only time i've ever seen Karl Denson put on a sub-par show, and in my opinion it had to do with the noticeable talent gap between Karl and the rest of the people in the band on that tour. Rest assured, that DID NOT happen last night. All of these guys were beyond stellar.
The opening act, Anders Osbourne, was also impressive. I only caught the end of his opening set,but those last few songs sounded great. I'll definitely be checking out his studio stuff, even if i'm not normally into his style of bluesy, jammy, rock. He sold it well and is a very talented guitarist. He joined Tiny Universe on stage for the Sticky Fingers songs to help out as a 2nd lead guitar and background vocals. After they warmed the crowd up with about 3 quick Tiny Universe songs, they went right into "Brown Sugar". They did this one pretty straightforward but effective, and really got the crowd going. The best Sticky Fingers songs during this set to me were: "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "You Got To Move", and "Moonlight Mile", but they seriously straight owned every song. I would say "Sister Morphine" was probably at least 30 minutes long, they just jammed the fuck out. After "Moonlight Mile", they took a 5 minute break, then came back out and did 4 more Tiny Universe songs, and then called it a night. Everyone really killed it with their insane solos (especially Karl's flute solos and that lead guitarist). I'm so glad I didn't pass this show up as a novelty because I would have missed one helluva show.
