Silk Rhodes - "Silk Rhodes" - 2014
Silk Rhodes are a new duo on Stones Throw that are from Baltimore. They seem to make some lo-fi music that might loosely fit into the soul category, but definitely seems right at home on Stones Throw. These guys must have had a last minute name change, because they appear in the Stones Throw documentary billed as 'Royal Kush'. These guys kind of remind me of what it would sound like if Mayer Hawthorne tried to do a D'Angelo impression, but had the recording sensibility of the first Cody Chesnutt album, minus the clunkyness. I highly recommend checking this out and I could see these guys going big places in the future, once they've had time to blossom as artists more. Check out the video for "Pains". You can listen to the whole album here. You can purchase the album here.
Sweet Valley - "F.A.N.G." - 2014
Sweet Valley is continuing on with his series of awesome beat creations of all styles very nicely. This one is a lot more rowdy than i'm used to from this project, but still just as mesmerizing. You can listen to or download for free here.
Ras G + VHVL - "Seat Of The Soul" - 2014
This is a limited edition split cassette release that is long gone, but still available as mp3's. Ras brings his usual spaceness, and VHVL seems like a trippy newcomer to check out. All in all a solid little EP. You can listen to or purchase it here.
Traxman & Paisley Parks - "Far East EP" - 2014
One of Traxman's 8 billion releases from last year (ok, maybe i'm exaggerating a little). I like all of his tracks on here, but the Paisley Parks ones don't really do it for me. They're a little bit more jilted and progressive in nature, and maybe I just don't understand Japanese footwork yet. In any event, there's still some worthwhile tracks on here if you're a fan of the genre. You can listen to or purchase the EP here.
